Got an early start to the day, pulling up the hook at 7:30. We were expecting light winds, but none the less, had at least one sail out the entire trip. It took us 7 1/2 hrs to go 42 nm, and we had a very pleasant ride. I love early morning sails. Even though we had to motor, it is very peaceful with the calm seas, the sun just coming up, and barely any traffic on the water.
So we have arrived at The Solomans. Slowly motored up the river to an anchorage that was recommended to us. The anchorage has now become a mooring field at $40/ night. We have anchored in front of the mooring field beside two other boats. I hope no one else shows up to anchor cause there ain't much room. There are several marinas as we came up the river with hundreds of boats. So much for a tranquil evening. Unfortunately, we will probably be spending two days here as the weather does not look good for Saturday ( 20-30 kt gusts). We have noticed that the sun is getting hotter in the late afternoon when we're sitting in the cockpit, so sunscreen/mosquito netting is my next project. Perhaps I'll find a fabric store here to get started on it.
We took a walk around town. There isn't much here in the way of shopping. I'm thinking perhaps well need to get a ride across the bridge as I believe there are some Big Box stores there and perhaps I'll find a fabric store.
There is a huge cigarette boat race this weekend on the other side of the island. We heard a couple of them doing some runs this afternoon. They are sooo loud. Saturday is supposed to be gusting winds, so I don't know if they'll be able to race.
Boats, boats everywhere...
...and more boats!
Hey Debbie. You could consider a mosquito net from a trail shop or camping place. They are very large, light and inexpensive. You can drop it over the entire cockpit. We have friends here that have it and it works great. Saves making one. Joey
